In Memoriam

The Lindner community pays tribute to two faculty members whose passing became known to us in the past year.

John Powers [1938-2023]

John Powers, Law ’92, is remembered as a lifelong learner who empowered his students in and out of the classroom. During his 43-year tenure at the University of Cincinnati, he served on numerous committees and advised dozens of students as they completed their doctoral dissertations, on top of teaching courses and conducting research. Powers retired as professor emeritus in 2008.

“John was very popular with his students, especially those in his law and economics courses, where John taught as both an economist and as an attorney,” said Erwin Erhardt, PhD, professor-educator of economics. “He was admired for his quick wit and sense of humor, engaging in spirited debates with his colleagues in the old Faculty Club on campus.”

Lawrence Harold Horwitz [1946-2023]

Entrepreneur, patron of the arts, teacher. Lawrence “Larry” Horwitz held great influence in local and global business communities.

Outside of his 18-year teaching career at UC, he started several businesses, including an import company and medical funding service, and owned and managed several restaurants. Horwitz earned his Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from UC and his MBA from Harvard University in 1972.

“Larry was my inspiration and one of the main reasons that I am at UC today,” said David Rapien, associate professor-educator of operations, business analytics, and information systems, and Director, Kolodzik Business Scholars, Lindner Business Honors. “He was an amazing innovator, risk-taker, teacher and mentor to thousands of students.”
