President’s Greeting and Congratulations

Larry Grypp, President of the Goering Center

One of the best things about working at Goering Center is the diversity of our team. Some of us are enjoying “encore careers” following traditional careers in other industries. We have a few in mid-career, one brand new graduate, as well as a steady stream of interns and co-ops through our affiliation with the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati.

This makes us typical of businesses in the early twenty-first century. We are experiencing a shift in workplace demographics as more and more Millennial and Generation Y workers join our teams and advance into management roles. The expectations and motivations for these newer employees are causing businesses to re-evaluate their hiring and employment practices as they try to seamlessly blend the generations into cohesive teams.

At this year’s Family and Private Business Awards – our 17th annual – we celebrated regional businesses who have mastered this demographic mix. An independent panel of judges evaluated applicants’ hiring and employment practices, and whether those practices helped them unify a multigenerational workforce.

From 570 nominated companies, 75 were chosen as semifinalists, and on September 13, 18 companies were recognized for their success and resourcefulness at our awards gala at JACK Cincinnati Casino. We offer our hearty congratulations to these companies and are happy to honor them again today in this publication.

Another highlight of the evening was the induction of Drees Homes into the Greater Cincinnati Family Business Hall of Fame. Drees Homes was selected for outstanding achievements in four areas: community service, community image, employment growth and philanthropy.

Over its 85 years in business, the company – spanning three generations of the Drees family – has given back to the community via extensive contributions to the entire Northern Kentucky region.  This unwavering commitment, along with their philosophy to treat vendors, employees and clients with unqualified respect, has enabled Drees to become the nation's 10th largest privately-owned homebuilder, as well as our Hall of Fame honoree.

Family businesses create more than 70 percent of the new jobs in the U.S. economy. Ninety-five percent of family businesses are philanthropic, supporting their chosen causes. Likewise, our volunteers and corporate partners share their treasured time and resources with the Goering Center.

Fifth Third BankUSI Insurance and Cushman Wakefield were the premier sponsors of this celebration. Their generous support enabled us to host more than 700 guests – from Millennials to Boomers and everything in between – who make up, or support, the family and private businesses in our community.

Pam Beigh Named 2016 Keith Baldwin Volunteer Award Recipient

The Goering Center for Family & Private Business presented this year’s Keith Baldwin Award to volunteer Pam Beigh President and Founder of SalesCORE at the 17th Annual Family & Private Business Awards on September 13.

“We at the Goering Center quite literally depend on volunteer help,” said John Goering, founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Goering Center. “It’s important for us to recognize those whose outstanding contributions allow us to do the work we do.”

In appreciation of the outstanding contribution of those who donate their time and expertise to the Goering Center, the Board of Directors established the Keith Baldwin Volunteer Award in 2008.  “The award is named for Keith Baldwin because he epitomized the type of volunteer that is so valuable to the Center,” Goering said. “He is someone very devoted who gave endless time and expertise as a volunteer.”

Pam joined the center in 2009, and soon after offered her time and expertise to improve the Center’s sales process. “Pam’s advice and contributions in those early days is correlated with the growth that we’ve enjoyed,” says Goering Center President, Larry Grypp.

Pam helped the Center develop single-day programs, having presented in one, and has been an active source of member referrals over the years. She has served on the Center’s board of advisors for six years and as chair for one year, has been chair of their marketing committee and currently serves on the Center’s board of directors.

Pam’s involvement in the community goes beyond the Goering Center. She is active with the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, is a facilitator of Leadership Balance at Xavier University and a frequent guest speaker for the University of Cincinnati’s senior level Sales Management courses.
