Title: A Contract Design Model for Power Interruption Contracts
Description: Demand Response (DR) is a mechanism of changing electricity usage in response to peak demand and prices. DR reduces the overall cost of electricity for service providers and promotes energy savings. We study a DR program involving resi- dential customers. We develop a model that determines when to turn which power unit on or off, how much power to cut during peak demand hours, and what con- tract parameters to use in designing contracts between the provider and residential customers. In numerical experiments, the proposed model leads to projected cost savings of the order of 20%, compared to a current share-of-choice (SOC) bench- mark model used in practice. We also identify factors contributing to cost savings, quantify their impact, and study characteristics of customers picked by different contracts.
