Title: Cluster-Based Predicitve Models in Online Education
Description: As online education becomes a popular learning approach, the large amount of data generated by learning activities can be smartly utilized for the evaluation and assessment purposes. Traditional analytical tools and techniques are being adopted by the online education industry to improve services in critical areas such as student retention, grades, and graduation. To evaluate an online learning environmnent for students at the University of Phoenix, cluster analysis and regression analysis techniques were implemented to develop a cluster-specific predictive model and a simple direct regression model for student service management. In the cluster-specific predictive model, finite mixture models are used to classify students based on their learning attributes. Then, based on the learners segmentation framework, predictive models were developed to predict the target scores for given new learner attributes. Numerical results show that the cluster-specific model has a better performance for the model fitting. The advantages and limitations for each method are discussed and recommendations are provided for management to drive academic excellence.

Title: Information Entropy of Planning Cells as a Risk Measure for Portfolio Optimization
Description: The overall risk encountered from making a return-maximizing decision(s) includes the ambiguity resulting from choosing an appropriate probability distribution for the state space and, subsequently, the uncertainty derived from the particular probability distribution employed. A further method for proactively handling risk may also be addressed by considering how to best employ the selected state-space probabilities. For example, the conservative maximin approach where all of the probabilities are grouped into one planning cell may be used, or the risk-neutral expected value approach for which probabilities for all states are used for individual planning cells may be employed. These disparate usages of the probabilities may be linked by considering the full array of planning cell possibilities resulting in a frontier of potential decisions that span between the maximin and expected value approaches. Nonlinear integer optimization models for considering the maximin, expected value, or other intermediate planning cell strategy where information entropy will be used to measure the uncertainty that evolves from various planning cell strategies is introduced. The risk of the uncertainty as measured with entropy will be expressed as both 1) the objective to minimize subject to a constraint on expected returns and 2) an upper-bounded constraint coupled with an objective of maximizing return. A comparison of the entropy modeling approach to other portfolio optimization models that only employ the risk from the decision, including the Markowitz, condition value-at-risk, portfolio maximin, and mean absolute deviation models, is made.
