Among top 50 research firms, four led by graduates of UC’s B-school.

Good news for business students in the Carl H. Lindner College of Business. If you’re planning to launch a career in marketing research after graduation, consider yourself fortunate to be living in a city that boasts heavy hitters in the industry.

Consider the statistical evidence. According to the Honomichl Top 50 report compiled by the American Marketing Association, Cincinnati is headquarters to four of the top 50 marketing research companies: dunnhumbyUSA (No. 15), Burke, Inc. (No. 24), Directions Research (No. 27) and MarketVision Research (No. 40).

“This puts Cincinnati second only to New York City in the number of market research firms with headquarters in that city,” says Ric Sweeney, assistant professor-educator and director of the undergraduate marketing program in the Lindner College of Business.  “If you consider that Neilsen (ranked No. 1) also has a strong presence in Cincinnati, that puts us on par with NYC.”

Sweeney points out another weighty statistic. Of the top 50 firms, four of them are led by CEOs/presidents who received their degrees from the Lindner College of Business, which means the college has trained more leaders within the top 50 market research firms than any other university—more than Harvard (with 3), Columbia University (with 3) or Yale (with 1).

The leaders are:

  • Jeff Miller, MBA ‘88, CEO and chairman of the board of directors of Burke, Inc. (ranked No. 24).
  • Adam Rodgers, BBA ‘83, president and CEO of MLV Group Inc., in Jupiter, Florida (ranked No. 26).
  • Randy Brooks, MBA ‘75, founder and president of Directions Research Inc. (ranked No. 27)
  • John Gongos, MBA ‘84, president and CEO of Gongos Research Inc., in Auburn Hills, Michigan (ranked No. 42).

The report, now in its 39th year and compiled by Jack Honomichl, founder of Inside Research industry newsletter, tracks revenues in the market research industry and ranks companies based on those revenues.
