Alexandra Land, BBA ’15, took first place at the first Keg of Nails Sales Competition at the University of Louisville on February 10. UC team members Michael Hogan, CEAS ’13, and Jordan Mohler, BBA ’13, took second and third place.
Land, a Marvin P. Kolodzik Business Scholar majoring in marketing with a Spanish minor, says her weekly practice gave her confidence and helped hone her sales technique to take home a win.
“Outside of team practice, I researched the product I was selling to prepare for potential areas of objection, and I role-played with some of my teammates,” she says.
Land was part of a nine-member UC sales team to compete against a nine-member team from the University of Louisville. Each student had 20 minutes to sell a business software system called NetSuite to a buyer. In a separate room, five judges watched from a live video feed to rate students on their selling skills, including building report, uncovering needs, demonstrating the product, handling objections and closing the sale. Contestants received instant feedback on ways to improve.
Land will accompany members of the UC sales team as an alternate at National Collegiate Sales Competition March 2-March 5 in Atlanta, Georgia.
