Insurance and Risk Management Scholarships

Internal opportunities available to UC students only

Insurance and Risk Management Scholars Program

Through endowments and ongoing gifts, the Lindner College of Business provides significant scholarship support to achievement-oriented students with demonstrated superior academic and leadership abilities who are engaged in the formal study of insurance, risk management, and/or certified financial planning at either the undergraduate or graduate levels. Such students will be designated as IRM or CFP Scholars and will, subject to acceptance and renewal, be able to receive scholarship support and have significant interaction with industry leaders. Within the Scholars designation, scholarship recipients will be designated as:

  • Cincinnati Insurance Company Scholars;
  • Great American Insurance Group Scholars;
  • The Norbert G. Backhus Scholarship recipient;
  • Gary Gruber Scholars, or
  • Nick and Myrna Orphan CFP Scholars*

*This program supports deserving students who are interested in careers focused on life insurance, retirement planning, wealth-management, and/or financial-planning.

Students receiving partial financial support through other internal or external scholarship programs (e.g., Kolodzik Business Scholars, Lindner College of Business Circle of Excellence) are eligible to apply; if chosen, in some select cases, scholarship awards through the IRM Scholars Program will cover the difference between tuition and the other scholarship awards. Those students receiving full scholarship support via other programs (e.g., the Lindner Honors-PLUS program) may also apply; in these cases scholarship grants through the IRM Scholars Program can be used to offset a student’s non-tuition (e.g., housing) expenses.

Designation as either an IRM or CFP Scholar is a distinctive honor reserved for only high-performance students. As a consequence, the number of scholarships awarded each year may vary with the quality of the applicant pool, with only students who meet or exceed an absolute high level of distinction in their academic and work experiences receiving scholarships.

Application and review process

To be eligible, a student must be matriculated to the University of Cincinnati and have declared a major or a minor in Insurance and Risk Management. A requirement for receiving an internal scholarship is that the applicant has applied for (but need not have received) at least one scholarship from an external source.

Applicants may be required to participate in an interview with all or a portion of the selection committee. To apply, a student must provide the following:

  1. A cover letter to the selection committee stating why the applicant wants to embark on the study of insurance and risk management and what the applicant hopes to achieve in a career in insurance and/or risk management. The selection committee will examine the applicant’s current transcript. If there is anything the applicant would like to tell the selection committee about the applicant’s academic performance to date, this information should be included in the cover letter.
  2. A resume; the resume should provide information on relevant work experience, extra-curricular activities, leadership roles, honors or special achievements, research or special projects/presentations, and participation in any business or related competitions.
  3. A list of all other external Insurance and/or Risk Management Scholarships to which the applicant has applied.
  4. A brief essay (no more than two pages) that describes at least one experience that has influenced how you think about business and management/leadership; explain how your views changed as a result of this experience.
  5. Two letters of recommendation, which address the applicant’s potential for a career in insurance and/or risk management; such letters can be provided by academic and/or industry references.

These items may be provided electronically or on paper. Electronic submissions should be sent to Center Director Steve Slezak, Steve.Slezak@uc.edu. Hard copy submissions may be hand-delivered to Mary Ann Lorenzen (402 Carl H. Lindner Hall) or mailed to:
