Roger Chiang is a Professor of Information Systems at Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems, Carl H. Lindner College of Business, University of Cincinnati. He received his B.S. degree in management science from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, M.S. degrees in computer science from Michigan State University and in business administration from University of Rochester, and Ph.D. degree in computers and information systems from University of Rochester. Before join University of Cincinnati in 1999, he was Associate Professor at Division of Strategy and Information Technology, Deputy Director of the Information Management Research Centre, and Deputy Director of MBA in Management of Information Technology, Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was consultant for Citibank, N.A. Singapore and conducted executive seminar on data warehousing and data mining for Abacus in 1998. Dr. Chiang’s research interests are in business intelligence and analytics, data and knowledge management, and intelligent systems, particularly in database reverse engineering, database integration, data and text mining, sentiment analysis, document classification and clustering, domain knowledge discovery, semantic information retrieval, and text analytics for market structure analysis. He has over sixty refereed articles published by conferences and journals including ACM Transactions on Database Systems, ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems, Communications of the ACM, The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems, Data & Knowledge Engineering, Decision Support Systems, Journal of American Society for Information Science and Technology, Journal of Database Administration, Journal of Management Information Systems, Marketing Science, MIS Quarterly, and Very Large Data Base Journal. He has served as the senior editor of The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems, Decision Sciences, and Journal of the Association of Information Systems, and the associate editor of Information & Management, Journal of the Association of Information Systems, Journal of Database Management, International Journal of Intelligent Systems in Accounting, Finance and Management, and MIS Quarterly. He has been the reviewer for more than twenty journals of computer science and information systems. He was the co-chair of 22nd International Conference on Information Systems, Research in Progress Track in 2001, ACM International Workshop on Web Information and Data Management in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and 21st Workshop on Information Systems and Technologies in 2011. He co-edited with Professors Hsinchun Chen and Veda Storey a special issue on Business Intelligence Research for MIS Quarterly, published in December 2012. He was the guest editor of a special issue on Strategic Value of Big Data and Business Analytics for Journal of Management Information Systems, published in June 2018. In 2014, Roger was awarded Michael L. Dean Excellence in Classroom Education & Learning Undergraduate Teaching by Lindner College of Business.

Title: Big Data Analytics for Heath Care
Description: Big data has the potential to create significant value in health care by improving outcomes while lowering costs. It’s widely acknowledged that the big data analytics in health care should provide health-related information to the general public, inform physicians about treatment choices to improve patient care and health outcomes. A report by McKinsey Global Institute in 2011 suggested that if US health care were to use big data creatively and effectively, this sector could create more than $300 billion in value every year. Two-thirds of the value would be in the form of reducing US health care expenditure. Taiwan public health care system produces an abundance of electronic health records (EHR) of the general public on an ongoing basis. However, the EHR generated in everyday medical practice are largely wasted. This is a common phenomenon for many countries. In Taiwan, the EHR in the format of structured and unstructured are largely under analysis and utilized. To harness this big medical data generated over many years, we need to establish a big medical data analytics framework to identify related public health care data sources, classify, collect, integrate, and manage this big medical data properly, analyze this big medical data with multiple analytic methods. The ultimate goal is to obtain actionable medical insights (knowledge and intelligence) to enhance public health surveillance and improve the patients’ health care with better informed medical treatments.

Title: Mining Consumer-Generated Product Reviews to Automate Market Structure Analyses
Description: The increasing popularity of social media has led to an exponential growth of user-generated content (UGC) in both volume and significance during the first decade of 21st century. One important type of user-generated content is online product reviews. Insightful product reviews contributed by consumers to a variety of social media could potentially be a gold mine for market intelligence. Online product reviews are unstructured text, which brings not only a unique opportunity but also challenges for both academic research and marketing applications. The major challenge results from the sheer number of reviews available and the lack of an automatic method/tool for effectively exploring this qualitative textual data. In this paper, we present an integrated method to automatically collect online product reviews and identify attributes and meta-attributes by text mining these reviews. Our proposed method is innovative and novel in that we integrate text mining techniques in analyzing the linguistic structure of review sentences. Through a prototype system, we conducted an empirical study by collecting reviews of Tablet computers from Amazon and analyzing 20,000+ reviews to identify attributes and meta-attributes. The empirical study demonstrates that (1) the market structure analysis can be automated by analyzing online product reviews, and (2) product attributes and meta-attributes can be effectively and automatically identified by using text mining techniques. The proposed method is sufficiently generic for automatic market structure analysis and can be applied to any social medium, any product category, or even service reviews. Future academic research and marketing applications related to this topic can be pursued based on the findings of our study.

Title: Socail Media Analytics to Predict Consumer-based Brand Equity
Description: Brand equity refers to the incremental value endowed by a brand to its product or service compared to an unbranded counterpart. Firms with higher brand equity have higher customer loyalty and command a price premium. Measuring and monitoring brand equity can help brand owners benefit the effectiveness of marketing activities and adjust their business strategies accordingly. Brand associations are critical components in assessing brand equity. Firms can measure their brand equities through the extraction of brand association networks. The association network makes up a brand’s image, and reveal the uniqueness and value of a brand to its consumers. The traditional approach in deriving brand associations relies on consumer surveys and interviews and incurs several limitations, such as time-consuming, sampling difficulty, and inability to capture the impact of unexpected events. Furthermore, the extraction and analysis of brand associations tends to be limited to the assessment of general brand impressions. A brand owner may have difficulty in knowing all brand associations and is unable to take actions for a salient brand association. In this research, we propose a text analytics approach to generate brand association networks and predict brand equity by collecting and analyzing online reviews readily available at social media. Our approach implements text mining and sentiment analysis on online reviews, i.e., user-generated content (UGC), to generate brand association networks. We develop a brand-equity prediction model that uses reviews and brand association networks to predict brand equity. Our proposed approach automates the identification of salient brand associations in constructing association networks. We identify a list of review-based variables and association-based variables in order to predict band equity. The empirical study of 25 airlines evaluate the proposed prediction model on its capability and accuracy in brand equity prediction. Our research supports brand owners and marketers an advanced approach and tool for the continuous surveillance of their brand equities
