The Center offers Excel classes that prepare students for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel Associate Certificate and Excel Expert Certificate exams.  There is also additional trainings focused on analytics methods in Excel.  Additional Excel for Analytics classes are being developed.


Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel Associate Certificate Training

This course will cover the fundamentals of creating and managing worksheets and workbooks, creating cells and ranges, creating tables, applying formulas and functions, and creating charts and objects.   Participants who successfully finish the course will have been exposed to the skills needed to take the Microsoft Office Specialists Excel Associate Certificate test.   Class materials will be provided prior to the beginning of the course.

Prerequisite:

  • At least three to six months prior experience with Excel
  • A requisite level of comfort creating and formatting basic workbooks.
  • Ability to launch and Navigate around the Excel User Interface, including Ribbons
  • Open a Workbook
  • Enter data in a cell
  • Basic understanding of Functions (e.g. =SUM(A1:A15))

Software: Excel version 2010 or later.  No Excel online.  Windows platform preferred, although participants can use Apple OS computers (some actions will be different between the two systems).



Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel Expert Certificate Training

This course picks up from the MOS Excel Associate course and introduces advanced Excel functionality, including managing workbooks, managing and formatting data, advanced formulas and macros, advanced tables, including PivotTables and PivotCharts.  Participants who successfully finish the course will have been exposed to the skills needed to take the Microsoft Office Specialist Excel Expert Certificate test.   Class materials will be provided prior to the beginning of the course?

Prerequisite:

  • Completion of Excel Associate Certificate class required, or equivalent experience in a professional or academic setting
  • Managing tables and data
  • Working knowledge of functions
  • Basic charting

Software: Excel version 2010 or later.  No Excel online.  Windows platform preferred, although participants can use Apple OS computers (some actions will be different between the two systems).


From Mess to Model

Real life is messy. All of us have encountered the feeling of “Where do I begin?” when facing a difficult problem or decision. This course will instruct attendees on how to take complex problems and transform them into structured models where advanced analytics methods can be applied to generate solutions. The course will introduce influence diagrams and decision trees for defining the problem and structuring a model. The course will discuss rapid prototyping of models to generate potential approaches. Proper modeling form and enhanced spreadsheet models will be emphasized. Prescriptive analytics methods such as optimization and simulation will also be discussed to solve the generated models.

  • Minimum requirement: Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel Associate Certificate Training.

Software: Excel version 2010 or later.  No Excel online.  Windows platform preferred, although participants can use Apple OS computers (some actions will be different between the two systems).
