Doing Well at Deutsche Bahn

Marketing major Annie Lerner explores Berlin through an international co-op.

While other UC seniors were running to class, marketing major Annie Lerner was exploring Berlin and practicing her German on the job. Working at Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national railway company, Annie helped run a weeklong summer school for high school students in Berlin, helped organize the firm's summer events for international interns in Germany and created their new international Twitter page.

Despite her many responsibilities, Annie still found the time to see things she couldn't see back home. When she wasn't at the office, she was out visiting sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and Berlin museums. Annie's favorite Berlin outings? “German movie theaters,” she says, and going to pubs to “watch the Bundesliga" (the German soccer league).

With a double minor in international business and German, Annie made sure her role with Deutsche Bahn would help future co-op students like herself. She created an information booklet for incoming students about "everything they need to know before coming to Germany." Her supervisor liked it so much, the booklet is now sent to every incoming Deutsche Bahn co-op student. But one of the best things Annie did in Berlin was meeting “tons of different people.” She says that “the other German interns were really nice too,” helping with everything “from directions and translations to where to get your hair cut.”
