Area Studies Courses

GLOBAL AREA STUDIES:  Approved List of Courses

Courses must be taken from a single global region

Students entering the BBA program are required to complete the language/global area studies/study abroad requirement. This requirement is an effort to internationalize the student's college experience and to encourage understanding and appreciation for different cultures and beliefs. Options to fulfill the 18-hour language/global area studies/study abroad requirement are listed below (Autumn 2006 through Summer 2012):

a) 18 hours of a single foreign language (six 3-hour classes)
b) 15 hours of a single foreign language (three 5-hour classes) PLUS an additional 3 hours of free elective
c) 9 hours of a single foreign language PLUS 9 hours of approved courses from one region of global area studies
d) 9 hours of a single foreign language PLUS 9 hours of approved study abroad
e) 9 hours of approved study abroad PLUS 9 hours of approved courses from one region of global area studies
f) 18 hours of approved study abroad

Global area studies consist of courses dealing with the same global region in subjects such as history, political science, geography or economics. The following courses have been pre-approved to meet this requirement. Any other course a student wishes to count as global area studies must be approved in advance by the Director of Undergraduate Programs on a Course Substitution Request form. Business courses do not count as global area studies courses.

Please note the level of the courses selected for global area studies. It is advised that a student take the introductory course (100-level) before attempting an upper level course (300-599 level).

  • 100-199 First level undergraduate courses
  • 201-499 Second through fourth level undergraduate courses
  • 500-599 Fifth level undergraduate courses to which graduate students may be admitted

NOTE: When searching for these classes on OneStop, do not use the category “World Languages and Area Studies”. These lists are not the same. Only the courses on the list below will fulfill the requirement.
