Length of time in Thailand: 3 weeks
Complete the international business concentration in one summer! Students earn 16 credits: they take two IB electives in Cincinnati the last five weeks of the summer and two IB courses in Thailand where they spend 21 days exploring Thai culture, politics, business and cross-cultural management. The program includes an academic program at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, company visits, discussions with local business people and cultural tours in Chiang Mai, (northern Thailand), and Ko Samui (Gulf of Thailand).
The City
Chiang Mai (population 160,000) was founded in the late 13th century and marked its official 700 year anniversary in 1 996. The city is the second largest in Thailand and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements of Thailand. Many Thais think that you have not visited Thailand unless you've seen Chiang Mai which is situated in a beautiful valley and surrounded by dense forests. Nearly 300 temples are located in and around the city, which is small enough to navigate on foot or by bicycle.
Chiang Mai is a trading crossroad between China to the north, Myanmar to the west and Bangkok to the South. Like many East Asian cities, Chiang Mai has a Night Bazaar, a legacy to the city's trade history, where careful shoppers can find all manner of bargains. The city and province of Chiang Mai are important centers of textile manufacturing. Recent years have seen an influx of high tech manufacturing in the area. The north of the province is teak country where elephants used to work in the forests.
