Jim Stengel, former global marketing officer at Procter & Gamble (P&G) brings his North American book tour to UC’s Carl H. Lindner College of Business on Friday, February 10, 2012.

Stengel’s book, “Grow: How Ideals Power Growth and Profit at the World’s Greatest Companies,” (Crown Business; December 27, 2011), examines why some businesses grow, and most don’t.

His Cincinnati visit, hosted by the Carl H. Lindner College of Business and sponsored by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, is part of a series of book tour stops that also include New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Toronto. (For a complete listing, visit jimstengel.com.)

Collaborating with leading research firm Millward Brown Optimor and the UCLA Anderson School of Management, Stengel’s global ten-year growth study of more than 50,000 brands reveals that those who center their business on the ideal of improving people’s lives have a growth triple that of their category competitors. In “Grow,” he details how 50 of the world’s best businesses—like Red Bull, Pampers, Discovery Communications—have a cause and effect relationship between financial performance and their ability to connect with fundamental human emotions, values and sense of purpose.

“Our research has shown how ideals can change the narrative of business, to shared growth and prosperity based on ideals of improving people’s lives,” explains Stengel. How and why it is imperative to be part of this new narrative is a question that occupies the center of “Grow” and to which Stengel provides a persuasive answer: the growth and profit of every business depends upon getting it right.

Stengel will address the business community audience in the newly renovated Robert and Rose Fealy auditorium in Carl H. Lindner Hall, home to the Lindner College of Business. A reception and book-signing event will follow Stengel’s address.

Stengel is excited to bring his message to Cincinnati and the UC community, with whom he has strong ties. While at P&G, he collaborated closely with Lindner College of Business faculty in identifying the factors that yield a high performance marketing organization. “UC played a pivotal role in P&G’s marketing transformation during the past decade,” Stengel says. “Being able to share the message from my research with the university and business community in Cincinnati is especially gratifying.”

Stengel, who worked for P&G from 1983 to 2008, was named to the First Executive Dream Team in the September 5, 2011 issue of Fortune magazine. He is currently president/CEO of the Jim Stengel Company, LLC, and adjunct professor of marketing at UCLA Anderson School of Management. He serves on the board of directors for AOL and Motorola Mobility and is an advisor for MarketShare, an industry-leading marketing analytics firm. Stengel appears regularly in the media, including Kudlow, the Wall Street Journal and Adweek, among other leading outlets. He is based out of Coronado, Calif., and Cincinnati.
