On Saturday September 23rd, the 2017 Ohio Latino Student Summit (OLSS) took place from 9am - 4pm at the UC Tangemen University Center. Hosted by UC Ethnic Program and Services (EPS), the summit was created to connect, empower, and build community while enhancing the Latino student leadership experience in Ohio, as stated on the EPS website.

The summit was welcomed by Dr. Bleuzette Marshall, UC Chief Diversity Officer, and Sherrod Brown, Ohio Senator, before kicking off three cycles of breakout sessions including a session on navigating the college search process to interviewing best practices for people at all stages of their careers. Following the breakout sessions, attendees listened to a message from keynote speaker, Jaime Carias, a leading urban educator, author, and researcher of minority populations. The summit concluded with a social networking reception open to all attendees and presenters.

The UC Center for Entrepreneurship & Commercialization (CEC) continues to support initiatives that focus on empowering minority populations and spreading awareness around diversity and inclusion. Programs like the OLSS are necessary for embracing and enhancing cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity on UC’s campus. Given the prevalence of entrepreneurship among minority populations and the richness that diversity brings to our urban campus at UC, the CEC welcomes opportunities to partner on such events in future.

Priscilla Ayala, Assistant Director of EPS, and the rest of the EPS staff team have been diligently planning 2017 OLSS for the past year.  “This partnership between the Office Ethnic Programs and Services, and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Commercialization is a great collaboration to continue to engage and enhance the Latino Student Experience at UC and Career Readiness for our Latino Students. This also aligns with the university’s Diversity and Inclusion’s mission to celebrate and ‘commit us [The University of Cincinnati] to excellence and diversity, by providing an inclusive environment for our undergraduate, graduate and professional students, as well as our faculty and staff.’”

Tom Dalziel, Executive Director of the CEC, presented at a breakout session titled, “Empowering Entrepreneurial Latino/Hispanic Students: Creating Your Success!” during the summit. With over 20 in attendance, session participants included business professionals, entrepreneurs, university students from UC and NKU, as well as high school teachers and students.

The session was fun and interactive and discussed entrepreneurship in big and small companies, the startup community at UC and Cincinnati, and ways attendees could become leaders on campus and beyond! Dalziel also presented opportunities for attendees to become a part of CEC programs including: LAUNCH!, the StartupUC Student Incubator, and our upcoming summer program for high school students, Project: Startup, which focuses on empowering minority entrepreneurs.
