Economists use index to measure consumer perception.

In a July 19, 2012 Cincinnati Enquirer article, Julie Heath, director of the Economics Center in the Carl H. Lindner College of Business, says that our level of confidence has a great deal to do with how healthy the economy is—and visa versa. The economy has an impact on consumers, and consumers have an impact on the economy.

Economists can gauge this skittish or confident perception through the Consumer Confidence Index, a measure of how we feel about current and future financial conditions.
