Economists use index to measure consumer perception.

In a July 19, 2012 Cincinnati Enquirer article, Julie Heath, director of the Economics Center in the Carl H. Lindner College of Business, says that our level of confidence has a great deal to do with how healthy the economy is—and visa versa. Economists can gauge this skittish or confident perception through the Consumer Confidence Index, a measure of how we feel about current and future financial conditions.
