UC Economics Center Partners with Local Elementary School to Mix Business with History

  • Thanks to a partnership with the UC College of Business Student Enterprise Program, Grant's Lick Elementary School students aren't just learning history, they're selling it.

In a cooperative effort with the University of Cincinnati's College of Business Student Enterprise Program (StEP), students at Grant's Lick Elementary School made their own history-inspired products and devised marketing campaigns complete with video commercials to make a sale at the school's March 24 American history festival. Students performed some of their commercials and a dance number during a school assembly March 23, and during a performance at the Cincinnati Museum Center later that same evening.

"This is of course icing on the cake for the students to be able to buy and sell products," said Val Krugh, director of UC's StEP program, an initiative designed to engage students and teachers in the design and operation of a functioning market economy in their schools. Grant's Lick Elementary is one of the program's best partners because they embrace a project-based thinking that allows for "thinking outside of the box" to happen, Krugh said.
