  • The quantitative analysis and operations management department at the UC College of Business retains its history and reflects current marketplace demand with a new name ? the Department of Operations and Business Analytics.

In February 2011, the UC Board of Trustees approved a name change for the quantitative analysis and operations management department at the UC College of Business. The new name ? the Department of Operations and Business Analytics ? is intended to better reflect business analytics as a fast-growing field and a core strength of the college.

One of the oldest of its kind in the country, the Department of Operations and Business Analytics has a rich history of more than 40 years of achievement at the College of Business. "We have been around for a long time and have built an international reputation as a department that prides itself on high impact research and teaching and using analytics to solve difficult problems faced by managers," says department head and professor Jeff Camm. "The growth and emphasis on business analytics in companies like IBM, UPS and P&G led us to change the name to what we believe is a more modern term for using mathematical and statistical modeling to help make better decisions."

Operations and business analytics faculty members are widely known for their expertise and commitment to teaching and research. They edit and publish in leading journals in the field and have been especially involved with the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), along with other local, national and international professional societies. Faculty members have also authored some of the market-leading texts in business analytics and operations management on topics such as simulation, quality management, business statistics and management science and quantitative methods.

In the classroom, operations and business analytics faculty focus on linking theory and practice to prepare students to analyze data, form solutions and solve real-world problems. Graduates find placements with top companies in the Greater Cincinnati region and across the country including such companies as Procter & Gamble, dunnhumbyUSA, Yahoo, eBay and GE Capital.

Each year, the department hosts the prestigious E. Leonard Arnoff Memorial Lecture on the Practice of Management Science. The lecture is regarded as the world's premiere lecture series on applied operations research and has showcased the top names in the field since its inception in 1992. In May 2011, the department, along with the UC Chapter of Omega Rho International Honor Society and INFORMS, will sponsor the 20th annual event.
