University of Cincinnati Celebrates Global Entrepreneurship Week

  • The University of Cincinnati Entrepreneurship Club and the Center for Entrepreneurship Education & Research marked Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010 with an impressive schedule of speakers ranging from founders of successful start-up companies to a top gun fighter pilot who beat cancer and has gone on to become a top entrepreneur.

The University of Cincinnati Entrepreneurship Club and the Center for Entrepreneurship Education & Research celebrated Global Entrepreneurship Week November 15-21, 2010 at the College of Business. The Entrepreneurship Club hosted several outstanding guest speakers who addressed students, faculty, staff and the general public about lessons learned on their entrepreneurial journeys. Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010 is designed to create life-changing experiences and spur firm creation around the globe. President Obama proclaimed National Entrepreneurs' Day on Nov. 19th.

On Monday, November 15, Micah Paldino, Founder of PB&J Public Relations spoke about "Building Your Brand" and how public relations and social media can build a community of people to care about your brand, products and services.

The E-Club hosted Jean Francois Flechet on Tuesday, November 16. Flechet is the Founder and CEO of Taste of Belgium. Taste of Belgium started with Liege Waffles and crepes and now has a full line bakery. He spoke on "How to Sustain Success" and what it takes to grow a business.

The spotlight was on Antoine Burnier, Founder and CEO of Piola Shoes on Wednesday, November 17. His audience heard about his journey on "Understanding the capital raising process and the tools you need to get your business off the ground."

The week wrapped up with featured guest speaker, Lt. Colonel Jeffery E. Lay who is known as "Wall Street's Top Gun." Lay is an entrepreneur, cancer survivor, decorated Top Gun fighter pilot and inspirational speaker. The event was open to the public and the College welcomed guests from the business community in Greater Cincinnati, along with faculty, staff and students from the University of Cincinnati. Lay spoke on "Entrepreneurial Leadership: The Key to Economic Recovery." He started his own global wealth management venture, Talon Eight, LLC, which specializes in calculated risk management and is based here in Cincinnati. He is an expert in strategic and tactical asset allocation and shared his incredible life and entrepreneurial journey.

Lt. Colonel Lay was presented with the Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence by Dr. Charles H. Matthews, Executive Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship. This award recognizes successful entrepreneurs that have a connection to the University of Cincinnati community that have accomplished not only new venture success, but demonstrated a commitment to the University and the broader Cincinnati community.
