Constance Cooper, department head of the hospitality management program at the UC College of Business, describes Ray Murray, the first African American school board member in the Lakota school district, as "passionate about young people and sincere about helping them to reach their career goals." Growing up in rural Tennessee, Murray learned that education could be a lifeline for anyone born into deprivation. In addition to serving on the Lakota school board, Murray is now the general manager and project director for the Hampton Inn & Suites in Clifton. Murray has worked with Cooper for years on the department of hospitality management advisory board, helping to revise the curriculum and mentoring students interested in the industry.
