If you're like most prospective graduate business students, you're considering graduate school as a way to open the door to better career opportunities. It's with this in mind that we've put together a comprehensive package of career services for your use. Our mission is not only to help you find suitable employment, but also to help you develop an identifiable career path that will challenge you to make full use of the skills you develop while earning your graduate business degree.
Career Panels
To help you determine which concentrations will make you the most marketable, we offer a series of panel discussions with corporate recruiters, UC alumni, and other business professionals. You'll learn what career opportunities are associated with each concentration and get insight into such issues as how choosing a concentration not related to your undergraduate degree and work experience might affect your chances of obtaining the type of position you seek. You'll also learn how to interview effectively for positions in careers of which you have little knowledge. Career Panels are an opportunity to have your questions answered by experts in the field before you begin.
Individual Meetings
One of the strengths of the graduate business program is the individual attention you receive from Career Services. You may schedule appointments less than 24 hours in advance, and short, walk-in appointments are also welcomed.
Less than a month into the program, you'll have a one-hour meeting with the Career Services Director, at which you'll share your employment experience, outline your career objectives, and discuss your salary expectation. Your resume will be critiqued, and you'll receive suggestions for improving it to make it more attractive to recruiters. You'll also learn about the out-of-state recruiting resources available through Career Services. This proactive partnership helps ensure that you'll find the best career opportunities and be prepared to take full advantage of them.
Career Development Workshops
Career Services workshops are built into your autumn quarter schedule. Workshop topics include: Self Assessment: How to Prepare a Highly Effective Resume, Behavioral Interviewing: How to Beat the Competition in the Onsite Interview, Job Search Correspondence, Designing an Effective Marketing Plan, and On-Campus Job Search Resources. In short, you'll learn what you need to know to conduct a successful job search.
Videotaped Mock Interviews
Before you begin interviewing with recruiters, you'll go through a mock interview conducted by the Career Services Director. The interview will be videotaped and your performance will be critiqued based on the director's experiences gained by participating in hundreds of mock interviews conducted and critiqued by corporate recruiters. You'll receive a videotaped copy of your interview, and a critique that will provide you with practical suggestions for presenting yourself and packaging your answers. As a result, when the time arrives for actual interviews, you'll be prepared and comfortable with the process.
Job Interviews
We actively recruit companies to interview our graduate business students. We continue to strengthen our relationships with companies we've worked with in the past and to encourage other potential employers to talk with our students.
