Describe the location you studied abroad for someone who has never been there?
The UAE is a remarkable place, it is innovative and on the brink of becoming the top emerging
economy and market. They do everything bigger and better and have a strong sense of pride when it comes to their government and country. The UAE is a melting pot of a lot of different ethnicities and cultures. Everything is built to perfection and the highest standards possible.
Why did you chose your program?
I wanted to expand my knowledge and travel horizon when it came to the Middle East.
What was your best memory from your time abroad?
My favorite memory was riding camels in the desert with my best friend.
How did you afford an international experience?
I afforded this program through grants, fundraising, and self-savings.
How did you plan academically to be able to study abroad?
I picked the study abroad that was most appealing to me and fit with my current class schedule
What was your favorite class or academic activity abroad? Why?
My favorite activity abroad was company visits to see how business plans are models are implemented globally.
Prior to travel how did you prepare yourself to experience a new culture?
I watched documentaries on the region as well as did research that was conducted in class
Describe interactions you had with locals (students, host families, guides).
What did you learn from these people?
I learned that Emiratis are very open-minded and innovative individuals. As foreigners it can be so easy to fall into stereotypes or just go off what is portrayed in the news. The people and the way of life are beautiful.
Has study abroad changed who you are as a person? If so, in what ways?
Yes, it has given me a more diverse mindset as well as stretched me culturally allowing me to become more open-minded and culturally aware.
What changes did family and friends notice about you after you returned to the US?
They noticed that I have a strong passion to travel and explore the world.
What professional skills did you gain while abroad?
I learned how business practices are done internationally and in the Middle East.
How has study abroad influenced you career path?
It has influenced my career path because it made me realize that I want to ultimately work for a global company.
What is something you learned from studying abroad?
Every experience is different for every individual, and what you open yourself up to is how big of an impact you will get.
What was your biggest challenge while studying abroad?
The biggest challenge was assimilating to the culture.
What accomplishment are you most proud of during your time abroad?
I am most proud of adapting to the culture, and being able to make connections and represent the University and America well.
If you had the chance to study abroad again, what would you do differently?
Go for a longer amount of time.
In your opinion, why should every student study abroad?
To gain a life changing experience that you will carry and remember for the rest of your life.
