Title:
From Bitcoin to Big Coin: The Impacts of Social Media on Bitcoin Performance

Description:
As the world's first completely decentralized digital payment system, Bitcoin represents a revolutionary phenomenon in financial markets. This study examines predictive relationships between social media and bitcoin returns by considering the relative effect of different social media platforms (Internet forum vs. microblogging) and the dynamics of the resulting relationships using vector autoregressive and vector error correction models. The results suggest that more bullish forums have a positive, statistically significant relationship with future bitcoin returns at a daily level. Internet forum predictive metrics outperform microblogging ones at a daily frequency, but their effects are opposite at an hourly frequency. The user-generated content contributed by the vocal minority and the silent majority exhibit distinct relationships with bitcoin performance, in terms of both transaction volumes and returns. The implications of these results for research and practice are notable with regard to the transformative power of social media analytics in networked business environments subject to the dynamics of bitcoin performance. Title:
Mining Consumer-Generated Product Reviews to Automate Market Structure Analyses

Description:
The increasing popularity of social media has led to an exponential growth of user-generated content (UGC) in both volume and significance during the first decade of 21st century. One important type of user-generated content is online product reviews. Insightful product reviews contributed by consumers to a variety of social media could potentially be a gold mine for market intelligence. Online product reviews are unstructured text, which brings not only a unique opportunity but also challenges for both academic research and marketing applications. The major challenge results from the sheer number of reviews available and the lack of an automatic method/tool for effectively exploring this qualitative textual data. In this paper, we present an integrated method to automatically collect online product reviews and identify attributes and meta-attributes by text mining these reviews. Our proposed method is innovative and novel in that we integrate text mining techniques in analyzing the linguistic structure of review sentences. Through a prototype system, we conducted an empirical study by collecting reviews of Tablet computers from Amazon and analyzing 20,000+ reviews to identify attributes and meta-attributes. The empirical study demonstrates that (1) the market structure analysis can be automated by analyzing online product reviews, and (2) product attributes and meta-attributes can be effectively and automatically identified by using text mining techniques. The proposed method is sufficiently generic for automatic market structure analysis and can be applied to any social medium, any product category, or even service reviews. Future academic research and marketing applications related to this topic can be pursued based on the findings of our study.
