Welcome to the Department of Economics at the University of Cincinnati. This is an exciting time to study and do economics at Cincinnati. Well-known throughout the University for its high-quality teaching, we also have a strong and improving research reputation.

For the undergraduate, economics is a fascinating subject, poised on the intersection between social science and business, and with great relevance for a wide range of public policy issues. Whether it is merely taking a few courses or choosing economics as a major, you will find economics an excellent preparation for careers in business and government and for further graduate and professional study.

For the graduate student, the department offers an exceptional MA in Applied Economics that is practical, flexible and career building. The program provides students with a solid foundation in economic theory and a very strong background in applied techniques. The degree has opened up a wide variety of career opportunities in both the public and private sectors for our graduate students.

Our department has a professionally active faculty with a wide range of research interests. The strongest areas in the department lie in applied econometrics and applied microeconomics. Areas of application include:

  • International trade 
  • Industrial organization
  • Environmental, urban, development
  • Labor economics

The department also has a vibrant and productive macroeconomic group.

Watch Professor Barry Nalebuff’s lecture, New Insights from Old Economics: Competing Complements and Lifecycle Investing Thursday, October 20, 2011 from  5:30 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. Nalebuff, Milton Steinbach Professor of Management, Yale University, is an expert on game theory. He has written extensively on the application of game theory to business strategy, and is the co-author of five books.

In addition to his academic work, Nalebuff has extensive experience consulting with multinational firms, from American Express, GE and McKinsey to Google and Rio Tinto. He is advising the NBA in their negotiations with the National Basketball Players Association, and serves on the board of Nationwide Insurance. In 1998, Nalebuff and former student Seth Goldman co-founded Honest Tea, a company that sells ready-to-drink iced tea that truly tastes like tea. The company is one of Inc. Magazine’s fastest growing companies and has grown (organically) from $0 to $70million in sales. In 2011, Coca-Cola purchased the company.
