Predictive Analytics Day

Featuring predictive analytics at Disney, a roadmap to predictive analytics from SAS, and what's hot in sports analytics.  A lunch panel discussion will cover analytics at Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals and the UC Bearcats

Tangeman University Center on the campus of the University of Cincinnati.

Big Data Analytics in Action

The 12th annual Business Intelligence Symposium will again feature four thought leaders in the areas of business intelligence and business analytics.  Each presenter will discuss their real-world experiences in implementing and applying big-data analytics.  After the presentations there will be a panel discussion from 12 - 1. This year the Summit featured two internationally recognized leaders in the field of analytics.


Dr. John Elder leads America’s largest and most experienced data mining consultancy and his company has solved projects in a huge variety of areas by mining data in tables, text, and links. Dr. Elder co-authored 3 books, has created data mining tools, and was a discoverer of ensemble methods.

Stephen Few has over 20 years of experience as an innovator, consultant, and educator in the fields of business intelligence (a.k.a. data warehousing and decision support) and information design. He focuses on the effective analysis and presentation of quantitative business information. Stephen is recognized as a world leader in the field of data visualization.

In addition to the speakers there will be four afternoon breakout sessions focusing on Descriptive Analytics, Prescriptive Analytics, Predictive Analytics, and "Building Your Analytics Team".

Sam Savage Author "The Flaw of Averages"

Sam L Savage: Stanford University and; Author of the Flaw of Averages presented "The Flaw of Averages and How to Cure It".  The Flaw of Averages is a set of systematic errors that occur when single “average” outcomes are substituted for uncertain future forecasts.

Mark Nigrini "Forensic Analytics"

Mark Nigrini: West Virginia University; PhD  Accounting University of Cincinnati; Author of Forensic Analytics (Wiley, 2011) presented "Benford’s Law as a Risk Analytics Tool". In the 1930s, Frank Benford, a physicist at GE discovered that there were predictable patterns to the digits in lists of numbers. He showed that the ten digits were not expected to occur evenly in tabulated data.

Kelton "Simulation with Arena"

David Kelton:Operations, Business Analytics, Information Systems faculty member, University of Cincinnati ; Author of best-selling simulation texts Simio snd Simulation: Modeling, Analysis, Applications and Simulation with Arena  will present "Valid Models and Analysis of Risk in Complex Real-World Settings:  Simulation as a Method of Choice".  The only thing that’s for sure is that nothing is for sure, so we need to consider uncertainty and risk in models of reality.

Keynote presentations by Eric Siegel (founder, Predictive Analytics World and author, Predictive Analytics: The Power to Predict Who Will Click, Buy, Lie, or Die) and Jack Levis (Director of Process Management at UPS).

In addition to our excellent keynote presentations, we offered full-day tracks on different areas of analytics: descriptive, predictive and prescriptive, as well as a special track focused on implementing analytics methods through social and mobile media. Speakers in these tracks included representatives from such companies as Macy's, Disney, Kroger, Fifth Third Bank, and many others.

Analytics Summit 2014 was held at the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center at the University of Cincinnati.

Data Mining Day

Speakers: John Elder, PhD (CEO, Elder Research, Inc), Nick Street, PhD (Professor and Department Executive Officer of Management Sciences Department, University of Iowa), Randy Collica (Sr. Solutions Architect, SAS)  

​Data Mining Day continued the tradition of highly successful events offered by the Center for Business Analytics. The day began with a networking breakfast where attendees networked with fellow analytics professionals as well as master's students from the University of Cincinnati programs in Information Systems and Business Analytics. The keynote presentation was give by John Elder, PhD, ​of ​Elder ​Research, ​Inc. ​Dr. ​Elder gave a exceptional talk on the exciting possibilities offered by data mining methods in many different areas as well as some common pitfalls.  Preseenter  Nick Street, PhD, from the University of Iowa, discussed data mining applications in healthcare. Randy Collica, Sr. Solutions Architect at SAS, presented on using text analytics to determine customers' future monetary values and future risk. Afternoon breakout sessions given by leading data mining software companies, SAS Enterprise Miner, RapidMiner and Frontline System's XLMiner, where attendees were able to learn about the relative benefits of using each of these packages for data mining analytics.

During this intensive one-day seminar, members and guests heard from leading experts and UC faculty on one of the hottest topics in business analytics. The event also featured hands-on demos of leading visualization packages.

Keynote speaker Stephen Few lectures and teaches worldwide on the presentation of quantitative data and information design and has authored several books on the topic. His consultancy, Perceptual Edge, counts Apple, Microsoft, eBay, Fidelity Investments, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Stanford University amongst its clients.

BI Symposium 2012: Analytics in Action

This event was held October 24, 2012

Speakers: Arnie Greenland (Distinguised Engineer, IBM), Gabe Gershenfeld (Strategic Analyst, Cleveland Indians), Glenn Wegryn (Principal, Analytic Impact, LLC)

The inaugural event from the Center of Business Analytics was the continuation of the series of Business Inteligence Symposia which seek to provide thought leadership in the area of analytics by bringing together business and IT professionals from various industries. As in years past, the BI Symposium was sponsored by LUCRUM.

This event featured a talk highlighting the success and future potential of IBM Watson in applying natural language processing to a variety of business problems. In sports, we learned about the usefulness of conjoint-based pricing in improving the fan experience. Finally, we heard from Glenn Wegryn who discussed trends in the field of analytics and their implications over the next 3-5 years.
