Automatic Domain Knowledge Extraction
Description:
Domain knowledge can be organized by ontology to facilitate Semantic Web applications. However, knowledge acquisition is costly, time consuming, and usually requires a manual collaboration between knowledge engineers and domain experts. We attempt to automate domain knowledge acquisition by developing an automatic domain knowledge extraction method that would enable knowledge engineers to focus on verifying the extracted domain knowledge and validating it with domain experts. The proposed method employs natural language processing and named entity recognition techniques and consists of three components: the document corpus, the heuristic rule base, and the general knowledge repository. This research demonstrates the feasibility of an automatic approach for knowledge acquisition and should encourage researchers to explore additional techniques and methods to achieve this goal. Our ultimate goal is to establish a framework so that we can assess which techniques work and how to integrate these techniques with general knowledge to extract domain knowledge efficiently and effectively.

Cluster-based Collaborative Filtering Recommendation
Description:
In today’s electronic commerce and knowledge economy environment, both individuals and organizations generate a lot of information items (e.g., product information and online textual documents) and in turn experience information overload in an overwhelming situation. To manage this ever-increasing information overload problem, both individuals and organizations seek recommendation services in suggesting relevant items. Recommendation is not a new phenomenon arising from the computer era but a common social activity. Recommendation agents have emerged and developed to not only address the challenge of information overload, but also provide personalized Web services. Among various recommendation techniques, the collaborative filtering approach is the most successful and widely adopted. However, the traditional collaborative filtering recommendation approach ignores item heterogeneities. That is, all user ratings on items are deemed identically important and given an equal weight in neighborhood formation process. In this study, we design a cluster-based collaborative filtering recommendation method to improve the recommendation effectiveness in term of prediction accuracy and coverage by considering item heterogeneities. We conduct a set of experiments to evaluate the proposed cluster-based collaborative filtering method. The empirical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method improves the prediction accuracy without sacrificing the prediction coverage, in comparing with the traditional collaborative filtering techniques.

Description:
Substantial work in knowledge engineering has focused on representing knowledge in a computational form. This research identifies the gap of knowledge engineering research on the human comprehension on representing knowledge. We call it ‘conceptual knowledge representation.’ We advocate the human comprehension should be separated from the computational reasoning on knowledge representation. To justify our claim, we establish a new knowledge representation scheme by adapting three relevant principles to enhance the human comprehension. A combined qualitative/quantitative experiment has been conducted to test the performance of applying these principles for conceptual knowledge representation.

Evaluation of Collaborative QA Systems
Description:
We address the question-answering (QA) task by drawing the wisdom of crowds from a collaborative QA system such as Yahoo! Answers. While collaborative QA systems are gaining popularity among Web users, it is well known that answers in these systems have unequal quality. We therefore propose a quality-aware framework to design QA methods that returns answers considering both answer relevance and quality. In addition to considering answer features for deter-mining answer quality, we introduce several other quality-aware QA methods using answer quality derived from the expertise of its answerer in asking and answering questions. Such expertise can be question independent or question de-pendent. We also evaluate the different methods using a database of 95K questions and 537K answers obtained from Yahoo! Answers. Our experiments have shown that answer quality can improve QA performance significantly. Furthermore, question dependent expertise based methods are shown to outperform methods using answer features only. It is also found that there are also good answers among the non-best answers identified by Yahoo! Answers users.
